Current position Research coordinator of the theme area of 'Quality and Organisation' at NIVEL Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research in Utrecht. (1999 - present) The theme area has 4 main aspects: a) research into the state-of-the-art of the implementation of quality management systems among healthcare institutions and professionals, b) research into the implementation of quality activities such as guidelines or site visits, c) research into the effects of quality management systems on the quality of the care process, the opinions of patients and clinical results, and d) research into risk management and patient safety. The research takes place in various health care fields, e.g. hospital, nursing homes, home health care organisations and mental health care. She is co-author and project manager of several NIVEL research projects on quality management systems and quality of care in home care institutions, hospitals, homes for the elderly and nursing homes. She is participating in a European Union funded research project on the structure and financing of home care institutions in Europe and research coordinator of the European Research Network on quality management (ENQual). Recently, she is coordinating the Dutch research programme on patient safety financed by the Dutch Ministry of Health and the medical specialist association.

NIVEL; Netherlands institute for health services research conducts applied (policy) research. NIVEL research projects are conducted for a large number of clients, such as government bodies, health care insurers, professional groups, health care organisations and patient and consumer organisations. NIVEL has a turnover of some 12 million euro (2003). Approximately one fith of this sum consists of government subsidies from the Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sport. The bulk of the projects is financed by project subsidies. NIVEL employs some 180 people. NIVEL received full ISO accreditation in December 2001. NIVEL is a Collaborating Centre of the WHO for primary health care research. NIVEL participates in two research schools accredited by KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences)
