Biography

I trained and practiced as a psychiatrist, leaving the NHS after 25 years in 2001. Since 1988 I have been involved in Healthcare quality and promoted quality developments while working as a doctor in management (clinical director and medical director) during the 1990’s.

I was a member of the executive of a UK multi-professional healthcare quality charity from 1990 and became chair of council (of what was then AQH) in 1995. In this capacity I was a member of the advisory council of NICE (the NHS National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for several years and as UK representative was a founder member of ESQH in 1998.

My other interests are psychoanalysis (I qualified in 1982), psychological research (I have a PhD in experimental psychology), and change management (I am a regular contributor to the EOQ summer camp events).

I am currently forensic psychiatry advisor to HASCAS, a UK NGO specialising in inspection, using consensus-based standards, of mental health facilities.

In the next few years I plan to divide my time between the Isle of Wight in England and Miranda do Corvo in Portugal. Thanks to modern technology I can remain connected and available in either charming venue.
