GP.59 Patient Safety Unit at County Council of Östergötland

Patient Safety Unit Regional (Sweden)

The County Council of Östergötland, which some years ago formed a central patient safety unit, works very actively with patient safety education (RCA and FMEA alike methods) and makes patient safety rounds in departments and hospitals.

Other County Councils now use the unit as teachers in patient safety knowledge in general, in particular for teaching teachers how to use the educational material referred to under answer 7g. There were 5 organisations behind the development of that material, which is partly a translation of material from the Veterans’ Hospitals in the USA.

Some other County Councils have nowadays an appointed patient safety person alongside the chief medical officer, who always has an implicit patient safety duty.
