National Study Hospitalisation-Related Adverse Events (Spain)
This study illustrates a reality of patient safety similar to one in other countries.
The National Study on Hospitalisation-Related Adverse Events (ENEAS), a retrospective cohorts study that has been conducted for a total of 5,624 patients from a sample of 24 hospitals, showed that the incidence of patients with AE's related directly to hospital care was 8.4% (95% CI: 7.7% - 9.1%). A total of 42.8% of the AE's were considered to be preventable. The study is still being carried out, trying to identify which patient characteristics determine AE. Moreover, its objectives, are:
- to determine the incidence of AE in each DRG and in primary health care; and
- to design an e-based monitoring system.
