GP.44 Critical Incident Reporting System (CIRS) (South Tirol)

Web-editor's note (June 2007): Please see Appendix 1, Example 16 for an English translation and more details of this project.

Critical Incident Reporting (Italy)

A network of two North Italian hospitals (Hospital Brixen, secondary care hospital with 400 beds and Hospital Sterzing , primary care hospital with 80 beds) have set up a Critical Incident Reporting System (CIRS) in the emergency area in 2006 in order to increase patient safety.

Unusually, the term CIRS is here defined in terms of near-misses.

A year of data collection is analysed and discussed. The project was deemed successful enough to lead to the adoption of the system across all clinical areas.

See for more details in English - Appendix 1, Example 16.
